Professional Experience

Carnegie Mellon University Human-Computer Interaction Institute, Pittsburgh, PA
Graduate Student Researcher, Aug 2004 – present
Building technologies to help people be more aware of their behavior. Conducted ethnography of adults who have lost weight or trying to lose weight. Developed experiment on the effects of using one's own face as an interface.

IBM Almaden Research Center, San Jose, CA
Graduate Student Intern, Sep 2008 – Dec 2008
Created a Firefox extensions that visualizes user's past browser actions to assist them to find sequences of actions to automate.

University of Washington Computer Science and Engineering, Seattle, WA
Research Assistant for Prof. Richard Anderson, Apr 2003 – Jun 2004
Developed a user interface feature to facilitate previewing of slides in a filmstrip interface. Started feature to visually differentiate handwritten notes.

University of Washington Department of Psychology, Seattle, WA
Research Assistant for Prof. Yuichi Shoda, Sep 2003 – Jun 2004
Developed and maintained chat room used for a psychology study on the male and female conception of sexuality and friendship.

University of California, Berkeley, CA
Research Intern for Prof. Anind K. Dey, Summer 2003
Researched and designed the interface for a CAPpella, a tool to program context-aware applications by demonstration. Created a paper prototype to test preliminary designs of interface.

CarDomain Networks, Inc., Kirkland, WA
Software Engineer Intern, Jun 2001 – Sep 2001
Analyzed features of web-based product review systems and designed company's first product review system (still in use today) and first price-matching system.

UW Office of Undergraduate Admissions, Seattle, WA
Web Developer, Dec 1999 – Jun 2001
Balanced technical and artistic abilities to implement and design a web site with more than 500 pages used by thousands of prospective students every year. Studied teachings of Edward Tufte and Jakob Nielsen.

Teaching Experience

Carnegie Mellon University, Pittsburgh, PA
Teaching Assistant for Prototyping User Interfaces, Spring 2007
Lectured on the organization of user interface systems. Assisted students in developing their assignments.

University of Washington, Seattle, WA
Teaching Assistant for Computer Graphics, Fall Quarter 2001
As a junior, taught and assisted senior students with programming four graphics projects using C++ and the OpenGL graphics library.

University of Washington Upward Bound Program, Seattle, WA

Relevant Projects

IMPACT, Fall Semester 2005 – present
Profs. Anind Dey and Jodi Forlizzi, Carnegie Mellon University
Exploring motivating users to be more physically active through monitoring and providing relevant information back to the user. Conducting ethnography of people who are trying to lose or who have lost weight. Classified 40 physical monitoring devices.

Grafitter, Spring Semester 2009 – present
Created a web site that leverages communication and sharing media to facilitate daily recording of personal behavioral information which is graphed on the web site for reflection. Winner of the 2009 Smiley Award.

MoodJam, Fall Semester 2005 – present
Developing a system that collects and displays information about the moods of people in a collocated area. Winner of two 2006 Google Gadget Awards: "Prettiest gadget" and "Gadget most likely to get you a date."

My Agent as Myself or Another, Fall Semester 2004 – Fall Semester 2005
Profs. Jodi Forlizzi, Anind Dey, and Sara Kiesler, Carnegie Mellon University
Explored the effect of agents that resemble the users on advice taking. Developed face-creation software and conducted experiments and analysis.

ElderMail, Fall Semester 2004
Prof. Jennifer Mankoff, Carnegie Mellon University
Built a device for the elderly that simplifies sending e-mail to family and friends. The interface uses a book metaphor: each task is represented with tabs and within each tab are pages that represent the steps in accomplishing the chosen task.

Electronic Placemat, Sep 2003 – Jun 2004
Prof. Richard Anderson, University of Washington
